We have found an innovative new way to streamline our vMix remote production workflow by adding new PTZ camera operators to our production. This new use case leverages remote PTZ camera controls with the web-based solution PTZOptics Hive. Hive integrates several advanced technologies to provide distributed production capabilities for remote teams. In this blog post, we’ll dive into how we implemented this workflow, the benefits it offers, and the tools we used to bring it all together.
Our video production system continues to utilize vMix on the local area network (LAN) with NDI HX cameras. vMix’s versatility and robust feature set make it an essential part of our setup, allowing for seamless video mixing, switching, and streaming. The use of NDI HX cameras ensures high-quality video streams with low latency, which is critical for live broadcasting.
The innovation in this workflow comes from leveraging “Stream 2” on PTZOptics cameras to provide a low bitrate video stream to Hive, a powerful platform for remote production. By utilizing Stream 2, we can transmit video at a lower bitrate, reducing the bandwidth requirements and making it feasible for remote control and monitoring over less reliable internet connections.
This new workflow offers a significant advantage by enabling distributed production capabilities for remote teams. Here’s how it all comes together:
– vMix for Video Switching: vMix remains the central hub for video switching and production, handling the primary high-quality video streams from NDI HX cameras.
– Zoom for Remote Team Collaboration: To facilitate real-time communication and collaboration among the production team, we used Zoom. This ensured that everyone, regardless of their location, could stay connected and coordinate effectively.
– Hive for Remote PTZ Camera Controls: Hive played a crucial role in managing the remote PTZ camera controls. The low bitrate video stream from Stream 2 on the PTZOptics cameras was sent to Hive, allowing remote operators to control the cameras with minimal latency and high responsiveness.
One of the primary benefits of this workflow is the enhanced flexibility it provides. Remote team members can control PTZ cameras and contribute to the production without being physically present on-site. This reduces travel costs and logistical challenges while enabling a more agile production process.
By utilizing the low bitrate video stream from Stream 2, we optimize bandwidth usage, ensuring smooth and reliable video transmission even over less robust internet connections. This is particularly beneficial for remote production scenarios where network reliability can vary.
The combination of Zoom and Hive facilitates seamless collaboration among the production team. Real-time communication via Zoom ensures that everyone is on the same page, while Hive’s intuitive interface allows remote operators to manage camera controls efficiently.
Exploring new workflows and leveraging advanced technologies is essential for staying ahead in the video production industry. Our latest setup, integrating vMix, Zoom, and Hive, demonstrates the potential of remote PTZ camera controls to enhance production capabilities and streamline operations. This innovative approach not only improves flexibility and efficiency but also opens up new possibilities for distributed production teams.
We’re excited to continue experimenting with this workflow and look forward to sharing more insights and updates. Stay tuned for more exciting developments in the world of remote video production!
