Tripod Warriors: The Best Mobile Tripod Systems for Sports Video – Chapter 8

Portable Sports Video Systems

Recording sports video in the field requires a portable, easy-to-use system that can be operated by a single person. Introducing the “Tripod Warriors” series, an example lineup of four mobile sports video systems designed for every level of production. Each system centers around a tall tripod setup that places the camera above players’ and coaches’ heads at 15 feet, ensuring a clear viewpoint. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned videographer, there’s a Tripod Warrior system for you.

Portable Sports Video Systems

Level 1: The Quick & Easy Tripod Warrior

Budget: $1,324 to $1,499

There are several entry level AI-camera systems that can be mounted on top of a tripod for recording and live streaming sports. VEO and Trace are two of the most popular. These easy to use cameras come with a subscription, but offer a complete cloud platform that makes it easy to share access with your team.

Key Components:

Product Price
Camera: VEO Camera System $1,299/year
Subscription: VEO platform. 1 Team, 30 users, 40 hours of recording per month. Included
Tripod: A tall tripod/light stand (prices vary based on size) $65-349
Total $1,364 to $1,648

How It Works:

The VEO camera is mounted atop a tall tripod, providing a clear vantage point above players and coaches. Using its dual-lens design and AI capabilities, the camera automatically tracks the ball and action throughout the game. After the match, recordings are uploaded to the VEO platform, where users can review, analyze and share game footage.

To set up, you only need to secure the camera to the tripod, connect it to a power source or portable power bank and ensure a stable internet connection for uploading the footage. The entire system is operated via the VEO mobile app, allowing you to start and stop recording with ease.

Advantages:

  • Fully Automated: No camera operator required; the AI does all the work.
  • Portable and Easy Setup: Lightweight and compact for easy transportation and quick assembly.
  • Professional Quality: Captures games in high resolution with seamless ball and player tracking.
  • Cloud-Based Analysis: Access the VEO platform for post-game review, highlight creation and team sharing.
  • Low Barrier to Entry: Perfect for teams or individuals new to sports video production.

Tips:

  • For improved portability, invest in a high-capacity power bank (like the Explorer 300 or larger from Jackery) to avoid relying on field-side electrical outlets.
  • Use the VEO platform’s analytics tools to generate highlight reels and focus on key gameplay moments.

The VEO Camera System is ideal for those looking for a turnkey, hassle-free solution that delivers high-quality video recordings and a straightforward workflow, all at a competitive price point.

Level 2: The Essential Tripod Warrior

Budget: $1,300 to $1,700

This entry-level system combines affordability and functionality, making it ideal for those just starting with sports video production who do not want to pay a monthly subscription. The 12X PTZ camera is ideal for tracking most sports up and down the field using a simple and affordable Xbox controller. OBS is a free software for recording the video and it can easily be used for live streaming or adding additional cameras in the future as needed.

Key Components:

Product Price
Camera: PTZOptics Move SE 12X $999
Recording Software: OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) Free
Computer: Mac or PC computer (i5 or better recommended for 1080p) Existing
Tripod: 13’ to 26’ tall for elevated views $65-349
Accessory 1: Heavy-duty tray for Tripod stands. This is used as a computer stand. $45

Total $1,369 to $1,653

Portable Video System Diagram

How It Works:

The 12X PTZ camera is mounted atop the tripod and connected to a simple PoE network switch. A laptop running OBS, a free video recording and live streaming software, is also connected to the same network switch. The Move SE camera supports NDI and can be connected to OSB with NDI (with the NDI plugin installed). OBS not only records high-quality video but you can use a plugin to display a scoreboard feature you can overlay on your recordings. This is especially helpful during post-game analysis, as you can quickly locate scoring moments by scrubbing through the timeline. If you want to create a highlight reel for the players, scrubbing through your videos based on the score is an effective way to edit the video.

PTZOptics offers a plugin for OBS which allows you to control the camera with an XBox controller connected to the computer via USB. The camera should have an IP address which you’ll enter into the OSB plugin. An IP address is like a street address telling the software which camera you want to control over your network.

Tip: If you would like to include audio from the gameplay you can connect a line-level shotgun microphone (perhaps through a small mixer or adapter to become line-level) to the camera’s 3.5mm audio input.

Tip 2: Using PTZOptics Hive, you can actually have someone else control the camera movements.

Level 3: The Advanced Tripod Warrior

Budget: $2,740 to $3,024

For advanced sports video production, the Level 3 system takes it to the next level with multi-camera capabilities and enhanced functionality.

Key Components:

Product Price
Camera: Two cameras. Move SE 12X and wide angle HuddleCamHD Pro IP $1,298
Recording System: YoloBox Pro (or better) laptop $999
Tripod: A tall tripod (prices vary based on size) $65-349
Accessory 1: Heavy-duty tray for Tripod stands. This is used as a computer stand. $45
Accessory 2: PoE network switch. This is used to power the camera and connect the computer. $60
Accessory 3: Power Station. If you do not have access to power you can get a battery with AC electrical outlets to power the PoE switch and your computer. $130
Accessory 4: ¼-20 Camera Clamp. Used to connect the Atomos ZATO to your tripod. $18
Cables: (3) 12’ ethernet cables $25
Total $2,029 to $2,923

How It Works:

This system supports two cameras mounted on a single tripod, providing multiple angles for comprehensive coverage. The YoloBox serves as both the recording device and the PTZ controller. It accepts video feeds via HDMI or NDI and its built-in touch screen offers intuitive controls for scoreboards, instant replay and multi-camera management. If you have a wireless router you can use your smartphone for scorekeeping.

YoloBox Ultra used to record four HDMI video sources in 4K.

For those looking to take their sports video production to the next level, the YoloBox Ultra is a game-changer. This compact, all-in-one device is specifically designed for managing multi-camera sports streaming setups. Compared to using a laptop or computer, the Director Mini also offers several key advantages that make it my top recommendation for advanced setups.

Advantages:

  • Multi-Camera Capability: Captures multiple angles seamlessly.
  • Advanced Features: Includes scoreboards and instant replay functionality.
  • Integrated Solution: Combines recording, control and playback in one device.
  • Tripod-Friendly Design: Its small size and lightweight build make it easy to attach directly to your tripod, keeping everything compact and organized.
  • Battery Power: Two NP-F Hot-Swappable Batteries.
  • Telestration Tools for Analysis: The ability to draw on the screen during live broadcasts or replays.
  • Expandable: Easily add an additional camera to your system by connecting it to your network switch. To capture a new angle all you need is a camera and an Ethernet cable.

The YoloBox Ultra is more than just a recording device—it’s a complete solution for professional sports streaming. Its combination of portability, ease of use and advanced features makes it the ideal choice for anyone looking to elevate their production quality without the complexity of a traditional computer-based setup. If you’re building a Level 3 “Tripod Warrior” system, the YoloBox is an investment that will pay off in performance, reliability and professional-grade results.

Why Choose SkyCoach?

SkyCoach brings a new dimension to sports video production by combining live video capture, instant replay and wireless access for coaches. It supports two camera inputs, allowing for versatile setups that provide comprehensive coverage of the field or court.

  • Wireless Access for Coaches: Coaches can review live footage or instant replays from any location using tablets or smartphones connected to SkyCoach’s wireless system.
  • Two-Angle Replays: The system allows for seamless review of plays from two perspectives, offering a strategic advantage during games or practices.

The Two-Camera Setup

The Level 4 design features a two-camera configuration to maximize coverage and flexibility:

1. PTZ Camera on the Tripod

  • Position: Typically placed at the 50-yard line or a central location on the sideline.
  • Purpose: Provides dynamic coverage of the action with zoom and pan capabilities.
  • Connection: The PTZOptics camera connects to the SkyCoach system via HDMI.
  • Control: Operated using a serial joystick controller, enabling smooth pan, tilt and zoom movements for precise framing and tracking of plays.

2. Secondary Camera

  • Options:
    • Mounted in the end zone for a unique perspective on goal-line plays.
    • Positioned in the press box to capture a wide-angle view of the entire field.
  • Connection: Also linked to SkyCoach via HDMI.
  • Purpose: This static camera ensures continuous coverage and complements the PTZ camera by providing a stable, overarching view.

Key Features of the SkyCoach System

1. Instant Replay from Multiple Angles

SkyCoach’s built-in instant replay functionality allows coaches to view critical moments from two angles simultaneously. This feature is invaluable for:

  • Real-Time Analysis: Evaluate plays as they happen, enabling quick adjustments.
  • Player Feedback: Show athletes what went right—or wrong—immediately after a play.

2. Wireless Video Access

One of SkyCoach’s standout features is its ability to stream video wirelessly to connected devices.

  • Coach Convenience: Coaches can watch replays or live footage on their tablets or phones without being tethered to the system.
  • Collaboration: Multiple team members can access the video feed simultaneously, fostering collaboration and in-depth analysis.

3. Seamless Integration with PTZ Cameras

The SkyCoach system pairs perfectly with PTZOptics cameras, leveraging their zoom and pan capabilities for dynamic, professional-grade footage. The joystick controller ensures precise control over the PTZ camera’s movements, enabling operators to follow the action smoothly.

This diagram shows five PTZ presets set up for the faceoff locations in hockey.

PTZ presets are a feature of PTZ cameras which are used to recall specific positions. To use this feature, you can steer a PTZ camera to a specific location such as a faceoff area on a hockey rink. Once you have arrived at the specific location, you can save the preset. These presets can then be recalled at any time to quickly move your PTZ camera to that location. Depending on the sport you are working with you, you may be able to make great use out of PTZ presets to quickly capture closeups. Having a plan and a map like the image shown above can greatly increase your PTZ camera operators efficiency during fast paced games.

Advantages of the Level 4 Design

  1. Comprehensive Field Coverage: The combination of a PTZ camera and a secondary static (non-moving) camera ensures every angle is captured, from the wide field overview to zoomed-in, detailed shots.
  2. Wireless Access for Flexibility: Coaches and staff can analyze footage on the go, whether they’re on the sidelines or in the locker room.
  3. Dual-Purpose System: While ideal for coaching analysis, the system’s professional-grade video capabilities also make it suitable for live streaming games or creating highlight reels.
  4. Simple Setup: SkyCoach’s user-friendly interface and the ability to connect two cameras streamline the production process, allowing operators to focus on the game.

Practical Applications

Game-Day Advantage

Place one camera at the end zone and another on the sideline to capture the game’s most critical angles. With SkyCoach’s wireless functionality, coaches can adjust strategies in real-time based on replay feedback.

Practice Sessions

Use the system during practices to analyze player performance from multiple perspectives. Coaches can provide immediate, visual feedback to help players refine their techniques.

Versatility Across Sports

This setup isn’t limited to football—it’s ideal for any sport requiring multi-angle video analysis, such as soccer, basketball or lacrosse.

The Level 4 Tripod Warrior system with SkyCoach’s combination of multi-camera functionality, instant replay and wireless accessibility offers unmatched value for teams seeking a competitive edge. Whether you’re a coach analyzing plays or a videographer capturing game-day action, this setup provides the tools you need to succeed.
